Wensleydale Spiced Rum is a double distilled premium spiced dark rum, which some are now calling the smoothest and perhaps the best rum made in the United Kingdom.
This is extremely gratifying for us, and plays to something that lives at the heart of our distillery, and is also central to the gins that we make, making top quality Yorkshire-based products and representing the Yorkshire region that we are so proud of with high-quality products.
For us it is all about Yorkshire. With our gins, this is slightly easier than with our rum, as we source and use as many local botanicals as we can, and use our Yorkshire Dales spring water to cut the alcohol volume down to the required ABV. Rum is a drink that is synonymous with the Caribbean, and much as we would like to claim that our climates are similar, they are not!
Sugar cane and molasses (the base of all rums) are not grown in Yorkshire (let’s face it they need more sunshine), so to craft a Yorkshire provenance we instead created a taste that reflected our region and also worked hard to leave clues to our home county in the labelling and the words we used to describe Wensleydale Spiced Rum on the label.
The taste we created is a nod to the centuries-old confectionary businesses that surround us in North Yorkshire, with subtle hints of cocoa, vanilla, and tangerine zest.
The modern day meaning of ‘rum’ in the phrase ‘a right rum do’ is an adjective meaning ‘odd’ or ‘strange’. However in the 16th century when the term was coined it meant ‘excellent’ or ‘great’, which we feel describes our Wensleydale Spiced Rum. Rum is all about provenance, mystery, and history, and so we are happy to lean on the historical roots of a phrase that is synonymous with Yorkshire. Wensleydale Spiced Rum is truly a “Right Rum Do”.
And the label? Well, if you take a closer look and you will see residing in the art deco styling the fells of the Yorkshire Dales and the impressive viaducts that criss-cross the area. The main theme of the spiced rum is also reflected in the dark brown background colours (the cocoa) and the copper orange of the detailing and logo (the mandarin zest).
The eagle-eyed will also be able to see the odd mandarin segment and cocoa bean around the edges. It’s all about attention to detail inside the bottle and out.
